BMR Metabolism

Calories you intake minus calories you consume, this simple equation may lead you to the amount of weight that you’ll lose. If you get a positive number, it means you have a calorie deficit and you are going to loose weight. But, the “calories you consume” part can be a bit more complicated. The calories consumed may vary among different people; it may even change as a person go through different life stages.

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is very important when you’re trying to loose weight. BMR is the amount of energy you consume daily to perform important functions. It makes up majority of the calories you spend. Let’s say you haven’t gone through a heavy exercise lately and you loose 2000 calories per day, 1500-1600 of it will be your BMR. It’s the calories you consume even when you just lie around all day.

Now, why is this BMR important? It’s because it differs among people and it usually adjust to the person’s situation. For example, you decided to undergo the “starvation diet” and you can only intake 1000 calories per day. This diet will make your body assume that it’s in danger of insufficient energy. In effect, your body will automatically consume lesser energy for you to survive. Using a BMR Calculator can really help with this process.

A woman undergoing a starvation diet may think that she consumes 2000 calories per day and only takes in 1000 calories. This will make her assume that she has a 1000 calorie deficit per day and she’ll loose weight so fast. But no, this is not the case. The diet just lessens her BMR to survive and there are various estimates on the amount it may reduce. Diets usually cause a person to be unhealthy and it doesn’t actually produce rapid loss of weight.

So if you really want to loose weight, you must start thinking of how you may increase your BMR. A high BMR indicates that your body is thriving. To make it thrive, you must start eating a healthy and balanced diet. It must include food from various food groups. This will keep your body busy burning fat and doing its other functions.

Aerobic exercises don’t really result to rapid weight loss. It lessens your BMR because your body thinks that it lost a lot of energy in such a short period of time. Let’s say you just spend an hour on a treadmill, on the following hours, your body will consume lesser energy to adjust. An effective way to increase BMR is doing anaerobic exercises which include resistance training/muscular exercises. Your body will be active for days when you undergo anaerobic exercises.
